In recent years, TAG schools have aligned their essay requirements with STAAR, which means students write an ECR (Extended Constructed Response) and must type their essay during the test. Students are typically given 90 minutes, which has been plenty of time to both write and type. That said, we encourage all students to practice typing at home in preparation for both the STAAR test and TAG essay.

We will share more details once TAG requirements are released this fall — stay tuned to our newsletters!

In class, writing students are currently learning how to write a narrative essay, since it's the most relatable and easiest starting point for learning the writing process.

Make-Ups for Writing Classes: If your student misses a writing class, they can come 20–30 minutes before their next class to meet with their teacher and independently work on what was missed. Each student is allowed one make-up per semester.

She currently tutors K–12th grade math, including Algebra 1 & 2, Geometry, Calculus 1, 2, and 3, and even some college-level coursework. Let's turn math struggles into math sparkle! ✨

Through gathering this information, our goal is to ensure we are offering convenient and effective early literacy classes. Literacy Love is dedicated to ensuring more early childhood students have access to strong literacy skills.

What a summer it was at Literacy Love! From our school-aged campers building stronger reading and writing skills, to our youngest Preschool campers working on letters, numbers, and getting ready for the classroom — this summer was packed with learning, laughter, and so much growth.

Joanie Dunson grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and earned her BS in Early Childhood Education from Texas Christian University, later returning for her Masters in Educational Administration. She taught elementary school for several years across Texas and California before retiring to raise her two daughters, now both in college.

Joanie has stayed active in the Lake Highlands community through years of school volunteering and involvement with the Junior League of Dallas and the Lake Highlands Women's League, where she currently serves as PR chair. In her free time, she enjoys exercising, traveling, skiing, and playing mahjong.

7 Things ADHD Kids Need Before 9am

Mornings can be hard — but a few small shifts can make a big difference for kids with ADHD.

1. A slow wake-up — a few quiet minutes before anything is asked of them.

2. Protein at breakfast — it helps fuel focus better than carbs alone.

3. A little movement — even 10 minutes can improve attention for hours.

4. A heads-up on the day — knowing what's coming eases anxious energy.

6. 30 seconds of real connection — eye contact, their name, "I love you."

7. As few decisions as possible — laying things out the night before helps mornings run smoother.
